Are you engaged in providing care services?
We appreciate that you face all sorts of headaches, from commercial pressures such filling beds, meeting margins, making a profit and offering an excellent standard of care. There are also regulatory pressures caused the sheer volume of regulation and the seemingly continuous flux of legislation and changes in the industry.
The Care Quality Commission (CQC) began operating in April 2009 replacing the previous Commission for Social care Inspection (CSCI). The CQC is responsible for licensing and continuously monitoring care services. On 1st October 2010 the CQC launched its Care Directory whose stated remit is to provide an up to date picture of how well service providers are meeting essential standards. The CQC has various inspection and enforcement powers.
We know that your business will need the instil the best mix of skills, dedication and knowledge amongst staff whether that be carers, qualified nurses, caring assistants, registered home managers, business managers and at board level. We also know that from time to time you will need professional and practical help.
We have years of experience in helping care home owners deal with their HR and people management issues. We know the sorts of the issues that will face your business. Take a look at the following questions. Do these ring any bells with you?
- Safeguarding vulnerable adults – do your managers know how and when to make a POVA/ISA referral?
- Disciplinary hearings – I still dread doing them – how can I make them go more smoothly and with less repercussions?
- I have an allegation which may amount to abuse of a resident but the witnesses are saying different things – how should I proceed?
- Whistleblowing headaches – when is there a genuine whistleblowing situation and what should we do?
- Holiday pay/Sickness absence – do our staff who are off sick actually “clock up” holidays and how should we deal with this in practice?
- Changing terms and conditions of employment – we need to change our shift patterns – how can we push this through?
- Flexible working – I want to try to help but will this open the floodgates?
- We use bank staff on an “as and when required” basis – will they be considered to be employees and should we give them a contract of employment and holiday pay?
