Working with Children

Children are not immune to emotional and behavioural problems. Life today is much more demanding on children than it ever has been.

Clinical Hypnotherapy can be extremely successful when used with children, over the age of 5. This is partly because children have wonderful imaginations and love new experiences. They do not have the pre-formed ideas about hypnotherapy or how life should be in the same way that adults do through the experience of life. Therefore, hypnotherapy can be an incredibly effective therapy for children. It is an opportunity for them to experience something just for them, to have someone neutral interested in them and how they are feeling, allowing them to feel empowered, happy and confident

Some of the most common reasons for a child seeing a hypnotherapist are:

  • Bed wetting
  • Bullying
  • Changes to the family structure
  • Eating disorders
  • Fears
  • Low Self Esteem
  • Phobias
  • Problems at school
  • Sleep disorders
  • Thumb sucking

...although as with adults, children are individual and may be experiencing a huge number of other problems.

A variety of approaches can used when working with children, and younger children are encouraged to bring along their favourite toy to the appointments. The parent/guardian of the child is required to be involved in the initial appointment with Claire, where the issues are discussed. At subsequent appointments the child can be seen alone, or with the parent/guardian present – this will depend on the individual child, their circumstances and their confidence.
